The work of some of Australia’s most prominent Indigenous hip-hop artists will feature at a free public lecture at the University of Adelaide on Tuesday 14 July.
Guest speaker and research anthropologist Dr Suzi Hutchings, from the University’s Wirltu Yarlu Aboriginal Education unit, will show how the US-originated genres of hip-hop and rap music have been embraced by Australia’s Indigenous youth.
In turn, they’ve re-created a culturally appropriate artform that speaks directly to their own issues of social justice.
“Hip-Hop Saved My Life” will discuss the value of hip-hop as a vehicle of expression about the challenges of Indigenous life in contemporary Australia.
