The Crown and Anchor Hotel is ideally placed for Fringe madness, in the heart of the East End and mere steps away from the ‘hubs’. But it also holds its own throughout the year as one of Adelaide’s best and popular live music venues, a reputation it has earned over 2 decades of hosting hot bands.

CROWN+ANCHOR-historicAffectionately known as the Cranka, the building was first licensed all the way back in 1853, on the site of the original Union Inn Arms Hotel. These days, it has racked up a huge list of famous acts that have played the venue over the years, including Tex Perkins, Kim Salmon, The Mavis’, Circle Clan, Muzzy Pep, Fiona Horne, Rob Snarski and Dan Luscombe (Black Eyed Susans), The Spazzy’s, Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr) and more.

Popular local acts of recent times are also well known to the venue’s stage, including Bad//Dreems and Grenadiers, while the front bar has also earned a reputation as a place you might see a free DJ set by members of big name acts. Recent bands to get behind the decks while on tour in town include The Hives, who packed the room for their DJ session while touring the country in support of AC/DC, plus members of The Dandy Warhols, Pond, Tame Impala and more.

Programmed by part of the team at award-winning Adelaide management company / booking agency 5/4 Entertainment, the live music on offer would see rock n roll, garage and punk bands find their natural fit. While the venue can also host a broader range of music e.g. folk, indie etc,  the ‘vision’ is to provide a place where the “Lemmys” (Motorhead) or “Dave Grohls” (Foo Fighters) of the world would feel at home.

In 2016, the Cranka has been the home to Devil’s Crossroad’s EP Launch, some Bush Gothic curiosities, a sold out CCR show ‘Keep on Chooglin’ and Rhythm Caravan. The latter still has a show left at the tail end of Fringe – head on over and groove to the world music vibes.
