“Yacht Rock.” Yes, it is a thing. A popular thing… the Fringe show featuring this ‘genre’ of music has a reputation for selling out!
A creation of Adelaide’s indie act Doctor DeSoto, frontman Mikey Green confesses their show “The Marina – A Smooth Cruisin’ Yacht Rock Experience” is “easily the most ridiculous thing we’ve ever done. But scratch the surface of any respected original artist, hand them a cocktail, and you’ll find a fan of ‘yacht rock’. It’s science.
“In 2015, we enlisted a bunch more Adelaide icons and put on a Fringe ‘experiment’. And it worked. Boy did it work. And so, we’re bringing the show back, bolder and more ridiculous than ever.”
So what IS yacht rock? Think smooth, with a nautical vibe. Famous culprits include Christopher Cross (of course), The Eagles, Toto – you get the drift!
You’re encouraged to frock up in ’70s garb to fit the atmos of ‘The Thebarton Marina’, which is in fact the Wheatsheaf Hotel in groovy disguise. It’s a fully immersive experience so dust off your best jumpsuit and ‘climb aboard’ for 4 shows only from 25 Feb.
