Porchlight Parade are folk trio Kate Henderson, Tom Kalleske and Pearl Tassell. Born into their 3-piece form in 2016, the Adelaide-based act joined forces to bring to life ’Sidesleeper’, released in January 2017.
From funk-metal to pirate-rock to acoustic alt-folk, the three are no strangers to the local music scene, having played in most of the city’s major haunts over the years. In her late teens, Henderson gained national recognition with a Triple J Unearthed win and, a decade later, reappeared as a featured artist. She jokes that perhaps the national competition should include an ‘unearthed-reburied-unearthed-reburied-unearthed’ category. Kalleske has also re-materialised with acoustic guitar and banjo in hand following a 15 year stint with funk-metal act, Athletic Teenage Joggers and a mild Nick Drake obsession that remains unmedicated.
The two have no idea how they managed to wrangle the talents of contortion-loving, multi-instrumentalist, Tassel, who traded her electric bass for a giant double and an accordion affectionately named Dion in the name of all things folk.
With a second album in the pipeline, the unlikely trio are set to expand on their orchestral take on contemporary folk in 2017.
